Get to know Macau

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Macau.

Get to know Macau

Macau is one of the special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China. It consists of three linked islands and faces the South China Sea in the east and south. Macau is also well-known as the “Asian Las Vegas”.

If you are looking for a Macau hostel, it does not make much of a difference which borough you stay in because the city is pretty small and easy to explore. However, the most convenient place to find a Macau hostel is on the Macau Peninsula which is close to where all the action is. If you prefer instead to stay in a quiet neighborhood, stay on Taipa which hosts the Macau Stadium, or on Coloane which offers fabulous hiking opportunities.

The airport is located on the island of Taipa and is just a short ride from the center. The city is served by an extensive public transport system so getting around from your Macau hostel is not a problem wherever you choose to stay. The ferry terminal provides frequent connections to Hong Kong and several other cities on mainland China. You do not need a Chinese visa as a tourist to enter Macau.

While you are staying at a Macau hostel, you'll be surprised by the Mediterranean flair of the historic city center which features Macau’s most famous buildings, including the Leal Senado and the church of Sao Domingos. Visit Monte Fort and the Ruinas de Sao Paolo on the hillside and explore Macanese history at the Museum of Macau. At nighttime, lose some money (and enjoy doing it!) in one of Macau’s famous casinos.
