Things to know about Hostels in Barcelona
We share more details on the city itself. Let's talk a bit about the neigborhoods, safety tips and a few more basics you need to know when backpacking Barcelona.
Neighborhoods in Barcelona
Barcelona's most touristic areas are Placa Catalunya and the Old Town with Gothic Quarter (Barrio Gótico), El Born and El Raval.
These neighborhoods are very busy at night, so depending on where you are staying, it can be quite loud and not as comfortable.
We also recommend staying in Poble Nou (the beach area), Barceloneta (not many hostels here though), Poble Sec and Sant Antoni (Hipster Neighborhoods).
Check all hostels in Barcelona near beach here.
Gracia is the artsy neighborhood with great cafés, galleries, and bars. It is a popular neighborhood to get drinks and enjoy dinner.
The famous chess-formed neighborhood Eixample is another iconic area. Yet, this area is actually huge. Eixample includes the area around La Sagrada Famila, Passeig de Gracia, all the way to Sants.
Again, as long as you are staying within the proximity of the Old Town, your location will be good.
Safety Tips for Barcelona
Barcelona has a pickpocketing problem, no doubt.
Same as Rome and Paris, you really have to pay attention to your belongings when walking around, in public transport and especially the beach. Do not leave your belongings unattended when going to the beach. It is a well-known issue.
Therefore, pay some attention, and we recommend using pants with zippers, as an example. “Luckily”, armed robbery with physical violence is very rare, and thieves are “only” interested in your smartphone and wallet.
Hostel Safety Tips
Hostels are a great way to meet new people and save money while traveling, but it's important to be aware of your surroundings and take some precautions to stay safe. Hostels are in general very safe. Either way, always use the lockers for your valuables. Better safe than sorry! Here are some hostel safety tips to keep in mind:
Choose a safe hostel:
- Look for hostels in safe neighborhoods with good lighting and security features like lockers and secure entrances.
- Read reviews from other guests to get a sense of the hostel's atmosphere and safety.
Secure your belongings:
- Pack a lock to secure your belongings in the hostel lockers.
- Keep valuables with you, such as your passport, credit cards, and cash, or use a money belt.
- Don't leave your belongings unattended in common areas.
Be aware of your surroundings:
- Let someone you know where you're staying and when you expect to be back.
- Be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.
- Trust your gut instinct and avoid situations that make you feel uncomfortable.
Make copies of important documents:
- Make copies of your passport, ID, and travel insurance documents.
- Scan these copies and email them to yourself so you can access them from anywhere.
Be mindful of your alcohol consumption:
- It's easy to overindulge in a social hostel environment.
- Be mindful of your alcohol consumption and avoid leaving yourself in a vulnerable position.
Hostel staff:
- The hostel staff is there to help you.
- If you have any concerns about your safety, don't hesitate to talk to a staff member.
