Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Arenal Volcano
Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica, is an impressive and imposing volcano located in northern Costa Rica. At the foothills is the popular town of La Fortuna, where most travelers opt to rest their head. Waking up to a view of the volcano is very breathtaking, so it is worth getting a Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica hostel. However, there isn't a massive choice for Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica hostels or hostels in La Fortuna. Those on a budget tend to end up slightly further away. Having said that, there are a couple of good options, but it's good to book in advance as spaces are limited.
The Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna areas are great for restaurants, shops, bars, and nightclubs. Everything you need can be found around Arenal Volcano, however Costa Rica is generally expensive and this is a tourist hot spot! Be prepared to pay toward the higher end for accommodation here. Food and drinks also add up very quickly as you're paying a premium to be in such close proximity to the volcano.
Arenal Volcano is a fantastic location for activities and adrenaline junkies, who can engage in activities from rafting and zip lining to canyoning and horseback riding. For those looking for activities and adventure but nothing too crazy, it's a great place to go hiking and walking. There's the Arenal Waterfall, which has a cost to get into; there's five hundred steps on the way down, and the same to get back up again! Hanging Bridges National Park is another good place to visit and get deep into the rainforest with a tour, which will guide you over a series of hanging and stationary bridges and point out the various wildlife and views along the way.
Due to the volcanic activity from Arenal Volcano, the surrounding areas are full of hot springs. There's a river that flows naturally hot and is popular amongst the locals -- and those on a budget -- as it's free! And there's also the resort hot springs, which are more expensive but a lot more fancy -- not so rustic and natural but a nice treat.
Overall visiting Arenal Volcano is amazing and the views are awesome! Look around for accommodation and hostels in Arenal Volcano, but know that as it can be limited, you might end up slightly out of town. La Fortuna is the nearest town, which does have a couple of options!
