Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Cambridgeshire

There are two different destinations within the shire of Cambridgeshire, England, that have hostels listed. There are a few Cambridgeshire, England hostels in the town of Cambridge itself and then one in the town of Royston. Royston, however, is actually in Hertfordshire but is in quite close proximity to Cambridge. Both places are quite small and most things are within walking distance of each other and the hostels.

To get to Cambridgeshire, you can take a train from London. They run quite frequently so it is very easy to get here. If you book your train ticket well in advance you can get them for quite a good price. The longer you leave it, the more money you will wind up paying.

The town of Cambridge is incredibly famous globally for being the home of the prestigious Cambridge University. More Nobel Prizes have come out of this university than anywhere in the world and there are some must see places to get among the history of this amazing place. It is recommended to swing by the Cavendish Laboratory, which was home to some of the most incredible scientific discoveries that have ever happened such as the structure of both DNA and the atom. These amazing minds of course then celebrated in the Eagle Pub next door. This pub is also home to some amazing air force memorabilia and messages are written on the walls from the men who left to fight in World War II.

Many of the colleges are open at different times of the year for visitors. The biggest are Trinity College and Kings College. Many of them will be closed to visitors at different times of the year, depending on when the students are about or studying for exams, so check before you go. There are loads of walking tours that you can go on but the Footsteps free walking tour is recommended. You will also get harassed by people trying to get you to go punting. If this is something you want to do, book early and go down to one of the stands and book with a reputable company instead of with the guys that will approach you in the street. They will not give you as much of a history as the authorized tour guide companies.

If you get to Royston, the cave is worth a visit and they have a few different museums and art galleries with interesting history to visit as well. It is only approximately twenty kilometers from Cambridge, so if you have some extra time from here, it could be a good afternoon trip.
