Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Lincolnshire

Lincolnshire is a county in the east of England that is one of the more famous due to books detailing the story of Robin Hood and his merry men. It is in the greater region of Yorkshire and Humber. The region has some historic manor houses that will blow your mind, including the house where Sir Isaac Newton grew up (and scribbled all over the walls). England’s largest thatched manor, Alford Manor House, is also located in Lincolnshire.

There aren’t many hostels in Lincolnshire. However, the two most popular are quiet, out of the way places that are perfect for up to 20 people. They are very affordable indeed. If you aren’t looking for a hostel there are also cheap cottages and farms where you can stay. Considering how incredible the countryside of the region is, you aren’t going to be in the hostel or cottage for long periods of time.

When you wake up in Lincolnshire, you can take your pick from the many places to visit. These include a hall where the pilgrim Fathers (yes, the American Pilgrim Fathers!) were held prisoner at one point. The museums in the area are also some of the most unique, such as the Museum of RAF Firefighting, which commemorates the efforts of the Royal Air Force’s firefighting efforts. The Museum of Lincolnshire Life is another great place to visit, with a vintage, preserved World War I tank on display.

Churches abound in the area too. These include the famous Lincoln Cathedral as well as the Stow Minster, which is one of the oldest churches in all of England. Diversity is emphasized on throughout, with churches for nearly every denomination scattered across the county.

After having returned to the hostel or cottage for some rest and relaxation, you can then visit and experience the nightlife in the cities and villages of the region. Some of the best pubs and bars in the area are dotted around the cobbled streets of the city of Lincoln, while you can also enjoy cocktails at the waterfront if you want to!

If you’re someone who likes a good brew, the region has no less than 11 local breweries and distilleries. Make sure you take a trip down to some of them for the best tasting ale this side of the Atlantic!
