Our handwritten guide on Backpacking South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire is a region in England located in the southern part of Yorkshire. The region was once an industrial hub for the area, and is now one of the most modern parts of the country. It features good shopping, attractions for the whole family, and a very bustling nightlife too. Alongside these are sprawling Gothic buildings, monuments from the Victorian era, and museums too. South Yorkshire caters to the tastes of the old fashioned and the new.

This region features a few good hostels as well, spread around the area. With great rates, friendly hosts and good food, these hostels are worth staying in. You can also stay at one of the many inns, hotels, B&Bs and cottages if you want to.

Historic sites can be found nearly everywhere in South Yorkshire. The Wentworth Woodhouse is one such. One of the few stately manor houses in the area, it is joined by Cusworth Hall, Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, and the Wentworth Castle Gardens, all of which feature architecture dating back to the Victorian period.

When it comes to statues, you won’t run out of options. There are monuments from every period of British history. The Cholera Monument is always worth a visit, as is the Rockingham Mausoleum, an actual tomb featuring very interesting architecture.

If museums are more your style, a visit to The Vulcan Experience is highly recommended. This is a recently opened public tour site for the Vulcan XH558 experimental World War II jet plane, made by the RAF. You can actually climb into the cockpit and explore the plane. Other great military museums to visit include the Ashworth Barracks and the Kelham Island Museum.

For people who want to get in touch with nature, parks and wildlife sanctuaries abound in the region. The Yorkshire Wildlife Park is one of these, with diverse fauna roaming about. For a more unique experience, the Tropical Butterfly House is a great place to spend the day in.

To wrap the day up, one could visit Roche Abbey, the ruins of an old abbey, or relax while sitting around the fountain in front of Sheffield Town Hall. If spiritual meditation is what you need, you can also visit one of the many churches and cathedrals scattered around the cities and villages in South Yorkshire.
