Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Surrey
Surrey is located in the South East of England, just south west of London, and is known to be the wealthiest county in the whole of England. But there are still some inexpensive hostels in the area.
Towns or villages worth visiting in Surrey include Guildford, which is the largest town in Surrey. It has a medieval castle and excellent shopping on the main cobbled stone high street. Also Dorking, which has a hostel and some really good antique stores, vineyards and great hiking and walking trails. Farnham has a historic market and medieval castle. And Woking has a lot of good shops. There are also some great opportunities for hiking, biking, trail running, and wildlife spotting in the countryside and local woods. Leith Hill, in the North Downs is worth a visit. It's the highest point in Surrey, and offers a good view of the countryside, as well as some nice walking opportunities. And you can't visit Surrey without paying a visit to one of the many small British pubs for a pint, and some good traditional British grub. You can also get some pub food to get the whole experience.
Surrey is very easy to get to from London, you can either catch the train, bus or hire/ rent a car. There are also some ride sharing opportunities in and around Surrey. Most people that explore Surrey will either visit Guildford for the day, or rent or buy a cheap car.
There are quite a few accommodation options in Surrey, but only a few hostels. Most of the hostel accommodation options are located in the bigger towns, such as Guildford and Woking. Guildford also has a fairly large university, which means there is good nightlife, as well as more accommodation options, especially for backpackers, in hostels and guesthouses. If you are thinking about staying in Surrey for a while, then a short term lease could also be an option. Outside of the bigger towns, it can be a little more difficult looking for accommodation, and in most cases, there won't be any hostels available. The closest accommodation to a hostel in these smaller villages is a guesthouse, which will include a cooked English breakfast. But that will be slightly more expensive than the hostel option, unless of course you are travelling with several people, or are looking for a private room option.
