Hostels in Loire Valley

The Loire Valley is a region in central France. It is in the central bit of the Loire River and is mostly known for its lush vineyards, orchards, chateaux, and historic towns. The central Loire Valley is a a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it is known as the “Valley of a Thousand Chateaus” for its rich history, beautiful architecture, and impressive gardens. It is also one of the world’s most recognised wine regions.

The Loire Valley was first settled under Julius Caesar, but it was finessed under future Roman kings. In particular, the reign of Augustus saw the formation of several prominent Loire Valley towns. The first vineyards were planted under the late Roman emperors, leading to the Loire Valley’s fame today. The region was fought over by the successive Franks, Goths, Saracens, and English. Likely the most famous Loire Valley inhabitant is Joan of Arc, who successfully pushed the English away from the region.

During the Renaissance, the French kings relocated most of their palaces here. These castles became the summer residences of the French nobility, and the minor lords and dukes followed suit. Often, the entire court spent the summer in the Loire Valley! When the plague came to France in the 17th century, the royals retreated behind their walls in Paris leaving the chateaux to the elements. Today, these chateaux are highlights of the region.

The Loire Valley is only a short train ride from Paris; this is the easiest, quickest, and cheapest way to get here. The main towns in the Loire Valley are Amboise, Angers, Orléans, Saumur, and Tours. If you’re seeking a hostel, the best places to look are in the main towns. Hostels in rural France tend to cater to hikers as well as backpackers, but this means you meet a wide variety of people. The word for hostel in French is “auberge des jeunesse,” but if you ask “parlez vous Inglese” you could ask for a hostel as well.

The Loire Valley is full of spectacular architecture, from the medieval chateaux to the castles and cathedrals. Don’s miss the former home of Leonardo da Vinci, Clos de Luce, which is in modern-day Amboise.
