Best Hostels in Hostels in Srinagar

Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Kashmir

Kashmir is the northernmost portion of South Asia. Due to a dispute, it is divided by three countries. Pakistan and the Republic of China control the northwest and northeast areas, respectively. India has control of the central and southern region referred to as the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The state is located within the Himalayan mountains.

The best place to find Jammu and Kashmir hostels is in the state’s summer capital of Srinagar (the winter capital is Jammu). In this city, you will find numerous hostels, although most do not contain the word “hostel” in their names. Among them you can surely find a hostel to your liking, with clean rooms and beautiful grounds. Many accommodations are located near tourist attractions such as the Tulip Garden and lakes Dal and Nigeen. You may wish to settle into a hostel first or you might prefer to find the perfect option while sightseeing.

If you are visiting during the month of April, one particularly breathtaking point of interest to consider is the Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden. The government imports tulip bulbs of many different colors straight from Holland to this garden. Here you can see the most gorgeous rainbow of blooming tulips. Situated on the banks of Lake Dal, the entire view surrounding the garden is spectacular.

If you make your way over to Dal Lake, you will discover a whole new world: a town on water. From houseboats to floating shops and hotels, life in this town is centered around the lake. You can shop for souvenirs as well as admire the intricate furnishings of the houseboats. If you have not made reservations yet, this would be a great place to find a hostel. For an entertaining way to take in the whole view, you can opt to take a Shikara ride on one of the ornately decorated boats.

If you prefer to experience the town-on-water phenomenon, but in a quieter atmosphere, then you should head over to Lake Nigeen. It is the calm, clean version with a garden alongside where you can take a relaxing stroll.

For a fun day trip, keep your belongings in your Srinagar hostel and take a 35-mile drive to Gulmarg (where accommodations are limited). Once you arrive, purchase your ticket for the Gulmarg Gondola. Earlier reservations are also possible and preferable. The Gondola ride takes you up to two levels of Mount Apharwat, at about 8,500 miles and 13,000 feet high. There are many activities to enjoy, including horseback riding and snow boarding. Once you have enjoyed the fresh air and breathtaking view, your taxi ride back to your hostel in Srinagar will be the perfect way to wind down before bedtime.
