Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Flores
Flores is an incredible island with loads to see and do, but it is quite a long way off from what would be considered a well-traveled path. The only place where there are hostels in Flores is in the town of Labuan Bajo, There are a few hostels that are listed and some that aren't. If you are heading this way, it is a good idea to reserve a hostel in advance to make sure that you don't miss out, especially as this is the town where many of the boats sail in from Lombok. It is also a popular destination from which to do some of the most incredible diving in the world in and around the Komodo and Rinca islands.
If you are part of a larger group, it is quite a good deal to split the cost and hire a driver to take you across the island. Travel past the blue-stoned beaches, try some of the local wine from the distilleries on the side of the road, stop by the native village of Bajawa and see how the people live to get a real idea of the local experience. You will need some Indonesian language skills to do this, however, because English is not as prominent in Flores as it is in other, more touristy parts of Indonesia.
You can stay in and explore the larger town of Ruteng, famous for its barbecues on the side of the road, and continue on to Ende. Ende is a larger town centre that has an airport that will fly to many other major cities in Indonesia. From Ende, it is possible to travel to the small town of Moni and see Kelimutu Volcano and its multi-colored crater lakes. The other larger city you can fly to and from is Maumere. It is a coastal town that is quite beautiful and has some lovely snorkeling options, markets and culture to the city.
Getting around and seeing things in Flores is not really possible on public transportation and the roads are really bad and bumpy, so if you are considering taking a motorbike, expect to get a sore bottom. The best way to do it is to find fellow travelers to share a hired driver for a couple of days. There are guesthouses along the way that are quite cheap to rent and share, so don’t worry if there are no hostels in your destination towns.
