Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Gozo Island

Gozo is a really small island in Malta, part of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. Gozo is known as a tourist complement to the main island of Malta; here the landscapes are more rural, and beautiful hills will let you discover the amazing views of the coast.

You can arrive in Gozo via ferry from the port of Mgarr in Malta or via seaplane; either way, you won't want to miss some of the most fascinating historical sites –- the Ggantija Neolithic temples, some of the most ancient structures built by man still standing in the entire world, and the Calypso cave that you should explore. And of course, there are the lovely beaches -- one of the busiest beaches is the Ramla Bay, with orange sand, but you can spend more time in San Blas.

In the main city, you'll find nice spots and get a sense of its character. There are also a lot of places of interest -- you'll find many churches as you walk along the narrow roads. Even if you don't like churches that much, you shouldn't miss the Xewkija church, the biggest on the island, where the bells are rung several times a day.

Gozo is also known for some traditions, and the island gets really busy during some celebrations. The carnival is a must-do and during the weekend the island gets completely crowded. During summer, every weekend is a good excuse for feasts and often you'll find bands on the streets and fireworks in the evening. Sometimes there are also some traditional horse races in the streets and it's something you don't want to miss. Ask around for information about it.

There are few hostels in Gozo and in the celebration days it will be hard to book, so try to do it in advance. Gozo hostels are usually small and simple -- no luxury here, but full with nice people. The food here is really good, so ask in your hostel in Gozo for some tips about the best restaurants.
