Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Mauritius
Mauritius is a beautiful island nation in the Indian Ocean, two hours flying off the coast from Madagascar. It offers a scenery that most people only know from postcards and its stunning beaches attract tourists from all over the world.
Mauritius is a small, independent country in the Indian Ocean. It consists of two islands: Mauritius Island and Rodriguez. Mauritius Island is the more famous of the two and known for its stunning beaches. This is also the island where all international flights arrive. Rodriguez is an off-the-beaten-path destination and only visited by the more adventurous travelers.
Most visitors in Mauritius are couples and families. Solo and younger travelers are scarce. There are not many hostels in Mauritius, so it is recommended to check the availability of hostels before traveling to this destination. There are hostels in several towns around the island which provide a good base to explore all corners of Mauritius. This small country has many buses with frequent departures, making it easy to travel around the entire island.
The white sand beaches and beautiful turquoise ocean are the main reason for tourists to come to Mauritius. The beauty of these beaches can be found in only a few places on Earth. Some of the most beautiful and most visited beaches are in the north of the island. Trou Aux Biches and Grand Bay have the best infrastructure for tourists. The west also offers some stunning beaches where Flic en Flac is the main town to stay. Hostels can be booked in each of these areas.
Despite the north and west being the most popular to visit, beautiful beaches can be found all over the island. When visiting the west or south coast, you can find places where you will probably share an equally beautiful beach with very few other visitors. These areas are also generally cheaper than the more touristy north and west coasts.
Mahébourg is a town in the west with a more local vibe where visitors have easy access to one of the quiet beaches in the area. Unlike in many other countries in the world, here you can also see locals using the beach for socializing and sunbathing.
Other than its beaches, Mauritius also offers some gems in the country side. Several hiking paths can be taken and many waterfalls can be seen. The Black River Gorges National Park offers great hiking opportunities from the towns of Flic en Flac and Chamarel. The National Park is also home to the Grand Bassin, a sacred place for Hindus.
The Seven Colored Earth can also be found near Chamarel. As the name implies, visitors can see seven colors of earth caused by volcanic activity on the island. It’s a spectacular sight. Near the Seven Colored Earth, a 100-meter high waterfall can be seen. A trip to the Seven Colored Earth is a must when in Mauritius and can easily be organized from your hostel in Mauritius.
If you want to visit a tropical island with the most beautiful beaches which is also easy to traverse, then a vacation in Mauritius is recommended. The view of the sparkling, turquoise water washing over the white sand is a gorgeous sight to behold.
