Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Öland
Oland island is the second largest island in Sweden. It is a top choice for tourists from all over the world because of its many attractions. The island has a rich cultural heritage and is a very diverse place indeed. You can see relics from various parts of human history in Oland, and there are many activities to take part in.
One of these is the Solliden Palace. If you do some research, you should be able to find affordable hostels or home stays within walking distance of this famous home of the Swedish royal family. It is still in use by the nobility today. The gardens of the palace are open to the public and are a sight worth seeing.
Solliden Palace is located close to Borgholm, the town center of the island. You can usually get a cheap hostel in and around Oland. Just south of the town is the Borgholms Slott, one of the largest old ruined castles in Europe. Made entirely of limestone, this imposing castle was abandoned in the 1700s.
Another fortress of sorts you can visit is Eketorp, one of the few remaining ring forts on the island. It has been reconstructed from the original ruins of the medieval village. It could be nice to find a hostel nearby, so you can take your time exploring this village and the surrounding landscape.
One other sight you might be interested in the Lange Jan, the tallest lighthouse in all of Scandinavia and one which is still in operation today. After a tiring day exploring all these structures, you can come back to Borgholm and indulge in a selection of fine pastries at one of the old bakeries and cafés in the town.
If you want to see old sights in a controlled setting, try visiting the Himmelsberga, an open air museum on Oland which includes a preserved farming village on the east coast. The cottages and attire of the people there are completely in keeping with the era in which the village was built. Another museum inside the Borgholm municipality is the VIDA Museum, a modern art gallery located a few miles south of the town center.
Last, but not least, the naturalist in you might find the Stora Alvaret Nature Reserve a fascinating place to explore and unwind. Spread across the plains, it is known for its huge array of rare species of birds and plants. Other nature reserves on the island include Trollskogen and Neptuni Akrar, both of which are renowned in Oland.
