Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Östergötland

Astergatland, also known as Ostergotland, is a region in Sweden, known for its many natural attractions. It is famous among tourists from around the world, and with good reason. There are many things to do in this small but very diverse region.

If you’re staying at a hostel in Astergatland, consider a day trip to the Tinnero Nature Reserve in Linkoping. This huge nature park is a good place to unwind. Take long walks through the towering trees while looking at the diverse array of local flora and fauna.

Hostels may also be available at affordable rates near the castle Bjarka Saby. This ancient fortress is located right next to the Rengen Lake. Built in the 18th century, it was owned by a Swedish nobleman who sold it a few years ago. Today, it has been completely restored and offers guided tours enabling you to explore it.

A great way to take in the sights on a summer day is to take a boat trip around the region. You can hire boat trips at Arkosun on the east coast. Harstena island is a major attraction in the archipelago of islands that are a part of the Astergatland region.

Other maritime sights worth seeing include the Kinda Kanal canal locks in Sturefors. These locks were built way back in the 19th century and are still in operation today. At Sturefors, you can also find the Castle Park, open to everyone in the summer months. This is a great place to have a picnic by the lake.

If historic townships are more your style, try looking for a hostel in Knappingsborg. This is the Old Quarter of Norrkoping and is full of small boutiques, homely restaurants, and also has a quaint bakery. It isn’t too crowded either, and most of the wares and souvenirs are affordable.

Atvidaberg is another town you must visit, especially in the summer. Sit down and enjoy the live music played by local artists while enjoying cookies and baked goods at the Adelsnas Kaffe Stuga - café located right next to the Adelsnas castle.

And, while in Atvidaberg, you can also check out the ceramics and other colorful arts and crafts that the locals have on sale throughout the year. If you happen to go in December, you might just be lucky enough to enjoy the famous julbord, which is the Christmas version of the smorgasbord.
