This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Elbasan.
Elbasan is situated in Central Albania, not too far from the Albanian Alps, and about a hour from the country's capital, Tirana. There are many historical sites to see in Elbasan, as well as museums, churches, and mosques to visit. There are also a number of good hiking trails in the surrounding area. Horse riding is also an option.
There are a number of different accommodation options in Elbasan and the the surrounding area -- there is something for all budgets. In the centre, there are Elbasan hostels, guesthouses, B&Bs, and budget and luxury hotels and motels. In the outer areas there are a few campsites or autocamps, as well as guesthouses and hotels. Some campsites and autocamps close in the quieter months (any months other than July and August), so it is worth checking in advance if you are planning on camping. Hostels in Elbasan are generally the cheapest option, and usually offer both dorm and private room options, as well as common areas, a communal kitchen, and private or shared bathrooms with hot-water showers. Most hostels in Elbasan include free Wi-Fi, free tourist information about hikes and activities in the town, and free linen and towels. Some Elbasan hostels also provide complimentary breakfast; there are also plenty of bakeries that sell local food that is cheap and of good quality. There are also a few small markets and fruit and vegetable stalls in the town (Albania generally doesn't have bigger supermarkets). The town is easy to walk around, and many of the main attractions are sign-posted. Elbasan hostel staff can usually provide a map with the main attractions highlighted as well.
