Shkoder is large town situated in the north of Albania, not far from the Montenegro border crossing. It is also located near Shkoder Lake and nature reserve. Shkoder is a good base for onward travel to Montenegro. It is also known as the "gateway to the Albanian Alps," and day trips to the Alps can easily be arranged from the town. There are also a number of daily buses that operate to the countries capital, Tirana. Popular tourist activities in Shkoder include boat trips on Shkoder Lake and hikes up to the fortress, where you will have an good view of the town, lakes, and nearby mountains. The roads in Shkoder are surprisingly of a good standard -- in the center, there are even bicycle routes marked on the roads. If cycling in Shkoder, or in the whole of Albania, be careful of traffic, as it can be hectic and dangerous at times.
There are a number of accommodation options available, ranging from local guesthouses, Shkoder hostels, hotels, and camping grounds. Shkoder hostels are the cheapest option in the town, particular if you are traveling by yourself. Campgrounds tend to be situated outside the town, close to the nature reserve, however campsites are also reasonably priced. If traveling in a group, guesthouses may offer the cheapest option per person. Most Shkoder hostels and accommodations do not include breakfast, however there is usually a communal or private kitchen where you can cook your own food. There are also a number of cafes, restaurants, bars, and bakeries in the town. There are no major supermarkets; however, there are plenty of smaller mini-marts and fruit and vegetable stalls in the town.
