This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Steyr.
Steyr is the third-largest town in the Austrian state of Upper Austria with a very rich history, as the town was founded more than a thousand years ago. Nowadays, the town is an interesting mix of history and modern industry and perhaps one of the most-overlooked Austrian towns.
There are two rivers flowing through the city, Steyr and Enns, which meet near the town center, beneath the Lamberg Castle. Just a short walk away, you will find a historical main square, which is surrounded by numerous fascinating buildings from centuries ago. The most famous one is Bummerlhaus, which is one of the best-preserved Gothic buildings in Austria, but all of them are magnificent and just by walking among them, you can feel history in the air. There are also a couple of interesting churches and museums worth visiting, or you can simply just relax in the castle park. A particularly intriguing option to discover the town is a Night Watchman tour, in which the night watchman or watchwoman takes you around the town in traditional clothing, carrying a lantern, and telling tales and legends of the old days. Although there is a lot to see any time of the year, Steyr is especially wonderful during the Advent time, with its beautiful Christmas market and various musical performances that are definitely worth checking out.
If you're looking for a place to sleep, check around the train station -- you'll be able to find some not-too-expensive Steyr hostel dorms there.
