This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Placencia.
Placencia is a paradise of white sand beaches and mangrove trees, so no it is no wonder the small town hosts a large population of expats. It is one of the top destinations for tourists visiting Belize, and visitors will find the locals friendly and welcoming. There are only a handful of Placencia hostels, however, so booking in advance is generally recommended during the peak season.
There are loads of things to do in Placencia. With over twenty-five kilometers of beach, you can spend your days here relaxing in the sand with a good book, swimming, kayaking, snorkelling, or even fishing. Between April and July, it is also possible to spot whale sharks.
You can explore the mangroves of Placencia Lagoon in a canoe and spot a variety of birds and other wildlife, including manatees. On the other hand, if you are more interested in history, visit the nearby ruins of Nim Li Punit or the Mayflower Archaeological Reserve.
If you want to escape the heat but not waste away the day inside your Placencia hostel, why not go ten pin bowling? The alley is a short bus ride out of town, it is air conditioned, and it offers tasty pizzas at good prices. Be sure to call ahead, however, as it is a very popular activity, especially with the locals. Something else a little different, but also very interesting, is a Bunches of Fun Banana Farm Tour. If you do not have your own transport, that is ok. They can pick you up and drop you off as part of the service, and it even includes a free banana!
In the evening, take a stroll along the boardwalk and stop in at one of the many bars or restaurants for a sunset cocktail or an ice cold beer. If you are feeling really adventurous, there is even a tattoo studio in town offering custom designs.
Whatever it is you choose to do during your visit to Placencia, you are guaranteed to have a great time--just remember to book your Placencia hostel in advance to avoid disappointment.
