This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Lovech.
Lovech is a small city in northern central Bulgaria, with a population of approximately thirty thousand inhabitants. Lovech is a good base to check out the Devetashka Cave, several different waterfalls, and the Central Balkans mountain range. Lovech has a modern centre and an old town, set at the base of Hisarya Hill, which has the Hisarya Fortress, from the Roman era, proudly sitting atop. Hostels in Lovech are limited and located in the centre; it may be best to book in advance to secure a bed.
Lovech has a very rich history; its first inhabitants date back to the fortieth century B.C. Lovech was under different empire rulings, including the Roman and Ottoman empires. A walking loop around the old town will take you to the fortress, the statue, small churches, and museums displayed in two-hundred-year-old houses; which were built from the remaining rocks of the fortress.
Around Lovech is the Devetashka Cave System and Krushuna Falls, which are a must visit. It will be a little difficult to get to these places without a car, but it is doable by bus as they are both located near villages accessible by bus from Lovech. Additionally a trip out to the Central Balkans Mountains to hike is well worth it. If doing day trips by bus, it will be suitable to book a hostel in Lovech city centre; the bus stop will then only be a ten-minute walk away.
While Lovech has beautiful surroundings, don't forget to check out what the old town and new town offer. The two areas are connected by many bridges, but the most notable one is the covered bridge, which is bordered by multiple boutique shops.
This city is quiet, but offers a large amount of history of northern Bulgaria, emphasising mostly the struggles Lovech went through for their freedom. Once again, ensure you book a Lovech hostel in advance; you really don't want to miss this little gem and the surrounding areas.
