This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Koh Rong.
Koh Rong Island is a must-visit for any traveler looking for a hostel from which to explore the wonderful white beaches and clear blue water of Cambodia. A short ferry ride away from Sihanoukville, Koh Rong is a gorgeous backpacker island with much to see and do. Try fishing, snorkeling, beach volleyball, or night swimming with glow-in-the-dark plankton or simply relax on Long Beach (a must-do) with other travelers.
Koh Rong hostels are easily accessible by ferry from the pier in Sihanoukville. There are multiple ferry companies that offer boats from forty-five minutes to two hours each way (priced accordingly). Each ticket is round trip, so make sure you keep your ticket for your return ferry. It is not necessary to book ahead, but it is always recommended.
The first thing you must know about Koh Rong is that the island has no ATMs -- if you run out of cash, you will be forced to leave your passport, travel back to Sihanoukville to get money, and then return. It's a very expensive money run. Other than that, Koh Rong offers almost all amenities one could need from pharmacy, laundry (hand wash), and convenience stores. Please note that the selection may not be as good on the main land.
Koh Rong has more accommodation options than one could mention. The island offers every style of room from dorms to private rooms. There are a few Koh Rong Island hostels that are very much party hostels, but most are quite laid back, so make sure you know which style you are booking. Please note that due to ferry departure and arrival time, most check-outs are between 9:30 and 10 a.m. and check-ins are usually between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.
