We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Playas del Coco.
Playas del Coco, Costa Rica, is a popular tourist destination on the Pacific, located on the beach at the northern end of the Nicoya peninsula close to border of Nicaragua. Like the name implies, the beach here is magnificent and the main attraction of both this town and the peninsula in general. Playas del Coco offers a wide variety of water activities from surfing, to snorkeling, diving, sailing, and kite boarding. The town is exceptionally touristy and Westernized -- don't expect a great deal of Costa Rican feel or culture, but the town is a great place to visit for wonderful beach, water sports, and rowdy nightlife.
The hostels in Playas del Coco are generally geared for young, partying backpackers. Therefore some research may be required in order to find the right fit for you. Due to extreme popularity (especially in the high season), it is highly recommended to arrange your accommodation ahead of time as most of the more popular Playas del Coco hostels get booked quickly. Since the town is relatively small, all the amenities from banks to grocery stores are all within walking distance, and thanks to the high amount of tourists, most products are fairly easy to find because the town caters to visitors.
Getting to Playas del Coco is rather easy from most locations in Costa Rica. Most shuttle companies offer direct shuttles, and the bus from the airport in Liberia goes to the town. Playas del Coco is highly recommended for anyone who wishes to relax on the warm beach, try out some water sports, or have a night out on the town.
