This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Kuopio.
Kuopio is often considered the gateway of Lakeland of Finland. It is surrounded by picturesque lakes and mountains. You can stay at a Kuopio hostel and experience the Finnish culture -- be it the lakes, skiing, or world's biggest steam sauna.
Any visit to Kuopio is not complete without a visit to the beautiful Puijo Tower. A magnificent view awaits on this tower -- on a clear day, you can see the all the lakes surrounding the area and it offers a breathtaking experience. There is small trek to this place from the base. You can also reach it by car, but the trekking route is highly recommended if you want to enjoy a good experience of walking through the forest. In winter, starting from November, there will be snow on either sides of the path, making it more enthralling and enjoyable.
Market Hall, built in an Art Nouveau style, can be found at the Kuopio marketplace. It is closed on Sunday but is otherwise open throughout the year. Walk down the marketplace to catch an amazing and beautiful harbor. There are places around the harbor for walking -- a walk along the harbor can be peaceful and it also offers a good view of one of the surrounding lakes.
Half of Kuopio is occupied by forests and lakes, which makes it one of the best places in Finland if you are planning for some hiking. Hiking trails of short and medium length can be found in and around Kuopio. If you are interested in buildings, you should check out the neo-classical Kuopio Cathedral in city center. It is walkable distance from Old Town Square.
