This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Freiburg.
Freiburg is a city hugely popular with university students, which is not only due to its university being part of the excellence cluster but also for the city itself. For one thing, it is one of the sunniest places in all of Germany! Add to that incredibly pretty surroundings and the Black Forest on the doorstep plus a super lovely old town. The atmosphere in Freiburg has always been alternative with a very strong green movement. There are plenty of one-world shops, organic food, alternative cultural events, and people whizzing by on their bicycles. There are plenty of sights in the city, and it is all accessible on foot. There is a very useful, free walking map available at the tourist information office. The outdoors are very inviting here as well with beautiful springs and autumns plus plenty of snow for skiing in winter. Heed that summers here might get oppressively hot, though (for German standards).
There are quite a few Freiburg hostels of the privately owned type, plus classic government-run ones. The private hostels in Freiburg probably cater better to individual travelers as they are smaller and do not receive as many school groups. Amongst those private Freiburg hostels there are some real charmers, some even in the style of traditional Black Forest homes. In Freiburg, you might actually want to check out hostel locations before booking as they are not necessarily central. If you are more into the outdoors than the city, this might actually be an advantage. Also booking your Freiburg hostel ahead is well worth it, as the small hostels tend to get booked out on a regular basis.
