Achill Island is the largest island on the west coast of Ireland, and though its location is remote, there is no lack of things to do. If you are looking for traditional Irish music, head to the bar in your Achill Island hostel for good drinks and a lively night. Try some of the local pubs if you are in search of a good meal. If you plan on making your own food while in town, be sure to pick up necessities beforehand in Westport or Castlebar, as Achill Island is short on grocery shops. The island is best reached by bus if you are using public transportation, and the closest train station is in Westport; buses run from Westport and Castlebar to the island. Take heed, however, if you are traveling using public transportation -- pay attention to the bus schedules, as Sundays and holidays usually have very limited services and do not drop off near your Achill Island hostel. Check in advance! If you plan on driving, keep in mind that the only way to reach the island is through either Castlebar or Westport.
