Tanah Rata is the largest city in the Cameron Highlands and is nestled in the hillside of this magnificent area. Among the things that the area is most well known for are the tea plantations. You can take a trip from Tanah Rata out to one of the local plantations to learn about how tea is grown and processed to achieve the delicious cups of tea that we drink at home. The downtown area is also full of small cafes that do tea and scones -- this is one of the must dos in Tanah Rata. Another must-do on the food front is to go out for a meal of Chinese steamboat. There are different restaurants that line the streets with this specialty and the town is very well known for how well they do it.
Just outside of Tanah Rata there are a range of activities and places to visit like pick-your-own strawberry farms, butterfly and insect farms, and bee farms. If hiking is your thing there are some amazing hikes that you can do to some of the waterfalls in the area and if you are at the right time of year you may be lucky enough to come across the Rafflesia flower in full bloom, as these are the largest flowers in the world and a spectacular sight to see if you manage to catch them in their fifteen-day life cycle.
Hostels in Tanah Rata are scattered throughout the city center, on side streets off of the main street and on back roads. The town itself is fairly small and so most of the Tanah Rata hostels will be within walking distance to any amenities you may need.
