This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Isla Mujeres.
Isla Mujeres is a stunning island just out of Cancun. You can take the ferry over and relax in an environment that is far less commercial and touristy as Cancun. The hostels in Isla Mujeres are mostly in the area of the North Beach, which is where the ferry docks and majority of the shops and bars are. The North Beach is also a really nice, crystal-clear beach to sit on and they have chairs along the shore that you can hire from hotels if you would like or areas where you can just lay out a towel and relax on your own.
In the main shopping area you will find all of the amenities that you might need during your stay on the island including supermarkets, pharmacies, and banks. They have some really good restaurants, but they can be expensive. One of the hidden secrets of eating here is to find some of the small local places, which serve amazing food for a reasonable price. The hostels in Isla Mujeres are scattered around the island. All of them are close to the water and close to whatever you may need during your stay here.
The island has an abundance of diving, snorkeling, and other water activities. You can also hire a bicycle or a golf buggy for exploring the entire island and heading down to the South Beach, where most of the locals live and hang out. Mujeres is also home to a tortugaria or turtle sanctuary where you can go and see some of the local species.
The locals here will tell you that there are three lies of the island. I am leaving tomorrow; I am not drinking tonight; and I love you. It seems to be the case for most people who come here. Many come and stay way longer than they thought they would. It really is an island paradise.
