Egmond aan Zee is a relaxed coastal village found in Holland, and is a popular beach destination for the Dutch, famous for its fresh sea breeze. Although small, this village looks out onto the North Sea and can be the perfect seaside holiday. The location does not only boast a quaint, picturesque setting; there is also an abundance of history to be found in this tiny municipality.
You will have plenty to do in Egmond aan Zee. Whilst the highlights of the village are definitely the sea views, you will also find the impressive sight of the Van Speyk Lighthouse. This famous lighthouse was named after a Dutch sea captain, and was built in 1834 to guide the local fishermen home. Close by you will also find the tiny fishing cottages where these very fishermen lived - a true reflection of Egmond and its roots.
It is by the sea that you will find a range of accommodation available, such as sustainably run hostels, in keeping with the clean, ecologically friendly mindset of the Netherlands. These pretty hostels are relaxed and cosy, and most will offer a healthy breakfast with the price of a bed. The price range of these hostels are reasonable, coming in at under 20 euros a night for most.
Egmond aan de Hoef is home to the ruins of Egmond Castle, whose previous resident, Count of Egmond, was eventually beheaded in Brussels. Walk around the ruins and enjoy the stories, or have a look at the three monasteries that can be found in Egmond, all still occupied.
Take advantage of the closeness of the hostels found here to the many attractions in Egmond. For example, the town of Alkmaar, famous for its cheese market, is situated close by, and you would not want to miss the gorgeous tulips fields, if you go at the right time of year. Whenever you go, however, you are sure to find this seaside resort a pleasurable place to relax.
