Wanganui, on the southern coast of the South Bight of the North Island of New Zealand, is situated on the Wanganui River, is and a very pretty town filled with lots of park lands. The city is well known for its Maori heritage and you can find lots of information at the Wanganui Regional Museum. You may also want to visit the Sargent Gallery and the Opera House, take a stroll down the main street to soak up the local vibe, or book a riverboat cruise and head down the river. The Whanganui National Park is just outside of Wanganui town center and you can take a trip there to engage in white-water rafting and other outdoors activities on the Wanganui River or in and around the national park. You will need a car to get here.
Hostels in Wanganui are mostly in the city center. You will find all of the amenities that you may need within a major city such as banks and supermarkets. Ask at your hostel for the closest ones to your location. There are other Wanganui hostels that are a little further out and you are advised to have a car if you are visiting one of these hostels, as getting from town to town in New Zealand can be difficult with poor transport between towns. Bus services should run within the town center of Wanganui to help you get to wherever you need to go if it is not within walking distance.
