This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Matagalpa.
Matagalpa is one of the larger towns nestled in the highlands in northern Nicaragua. It doesn't have an overly touristy vibe to it, so it is a great place to hang out, meet locals, and observe the culture in an authentic Nicaraguan environment. There are two main parks within the city -- Parque Ruben Dario and Parque Morazon -- and between the two is a main street where you will find banks, supermarkets, clothing stores, pharmacies, and any other amenities that you might require during your stay to Matagalpa.
Most of the hostels in Matagalpa are found in and around the surrounding area, so they are close to everything; however, some are quite a ways out of the town center, so it is best to do your research as to the location of your Matagalpa hostel. Most of the Matagalpa hostels are a distance from the local bus stations, so you will need to catch a taxi to your hostels when you are arriving.
One of the highlights of Matagalpa is El Castillo de Cacao, which is a chocolate factory that manufactures the most famous Nicaraguan chocolate. You can take a tour out there and purchase chocolates at a discounted price compared to the shops. There are also tour companies within Matagalpa that offer tours to the surrounding regions to coffee plantations and other natural features where you can go hiking and enjoy the natural beauty that this area has to offer. The place has a very chilled-out environment and it's good to spend a day or two exploring the region.
