This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Leiria.
Leiria is located in central Portugal, in the region of the same name. Although the town itself remains quite scarcely visited by tourists compared to the popular destinations of nearby Batalha -- with its magnificent cathedral and Fatima, which is famous for its religious significance -- Leiria can serve as an excellent base to discover everything the region has to offer. Located halfway between Peniche, one of the best surfing spots on this coastline, and Coimbra, the prestigious university town, if you are setting off from Leiria, you will definitely find something to take your fancy, no matter if you are here to delve into the history and cultural heritage of Portugal or to enjoy its sunny beaches.
However, once in Leiria, the town itself is worth a few hours of sightseeing. Most famous for its Medieval castle that was built by the first king of Portugal as a defense against the invading Moors, the construction occupies an impressive place overlooking the town. It is especially nice during the night, when it is lit up against the cliff on which it is located.
After a visit to the castle, those interested in the historic past might want to plan a visit to the Museu de Leiria, which is the perfect place to get an impression of what has been happening in this region through the last thousand years, but others might just enjoy a pleasant walk through the narrow streets of the historic center and a peek into some of the traditional souvenir shops.
As for accommodation, the budget traveler is definitely not spoilt with options here, as Leiria, Portugal hostel options in the town are sparse; however, what's available is quite nice, with a cosy, familiar feel; spacious dorms; and massive kitchen and living area. Best of all, Portuguese hospitality is guaranteed not to let you down if you choose a Leiria, Portugal hostel!
