This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Yaroslavl.
Yaroslavl is the oldest still-existing city on the Volga River and one of the cities of the Zolotoe Koltso (Golden Ring) and one of the few cities of the Golden Ring that has hostels. The Golden Ring comprises of cities that played an important role in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church and Yaroslavl is one of the original eight cities. As such a city, Yaroslavl has very important cultural heritage and has many well-preserved churches and cathedrals, as many of them are very close to banks of the Volga River. The most famous of them are the Church of Elijah the Prophet, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, the Epiphany Church, and the Dormition Cathedral.
The entire Historical Center of the City of Yaroslavl is a UNESCO Heritage Site. And what is great, there are several Yaroslavl hostels located within walking distance from the Historical Center. Other Yaroslavl hostels are located not very far from the city center and most of them have very convenient locations. Winters can be brutally cold, and often, the entire Volga River gets frozen. Needless to say, you need to book a warm Yaroslavl hostel if you visit the city in the winter.
Nightlife is not very special and the city can be quite boring during the weekdays. In that case, you need to visit Moscow -- it's not very far (only two hundred fifty kilometers) and you can even take a direct electrichka (low-speed regional train) to get there. There is even a small airport with many national and a few international flights. Yaroslavl is a very pretty city and it is great for a short visit, especially if you are staying in Moscow and you need a break from the big city. And it is a must to take a Golden Ring tour.
