This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Košice.
Košice is the second-biggest city in Slovakia and was chosen to be the European Cultural Capital in 2013. The city center is old and well preserved. You can visit the Executioner's Bastion and the Mill Bastion; the Košice State Theater; the East Slovak Museum; and many churches from different denominations, including the Calvinist Church, the Franciscan Church, the Evangelical Church, the Dominican Church, the Synagogue at Puškinová Street, and the Premonstratensian Church.
Košice has a very convenient location for traveling to different neighboring countries. Hungary is less than thirty kilometers, and Ukraine is less than a hundred kilometers away. Although Romania does not have a border with Slovakia, Romania is only two hundred kilometers from Košice. In fact, you need more time to get to Bratislava (four hundred kilometers away) than to any of these countries but there are regular flights from Košice to Bratislava, Prague, Vienna, and other destinations. We should not forget that the Slovak Tatry are also a hundred kilometers away from Košice so it is worth visiting the city in the winter, as well. However, there are only a few hostels in Košice from which you can choose. Luckily, there are Košice hostels that operate all year long and prices do not vary much throughout the year.
Nightlife in Košice is good at weekends and nothing special during the rest of the week. However, there are many good restaurants where you can taste delicious Slovak meals. Prices are moderate and portions are big with interesting lunch deals. Košice is a nice small city, which is a great stop for a few days if you make a European trip. From here, you can easily choose your next destination. The city is nice at any time of the year and will appeal to people who like smaller places with rich history. Hostels in Košice are not very expensive, so this will help your budget.
