Looking for budget stays in Novo Mesto? This section is designed to save you time, money, and unnecessary stress. We've got insider tips to help you find affordable hostels and the cheapest places to stay in Novo Mesto.
The Novo Mesto area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. However, only in the fourteenth century, on the hill above the waterfalls, a fortress was built by Rudolf IV of Habsburg. The peasant revolts and infections during the sixteenth century led to the decline of Novo Mesto. This lasted until the eighteenth century, when the trade and crafts developed quickly, a tendency that continued in the nineteenth century. Novo Mesto was many centuries part of the Habsburg Empire. In the early twentieth century, it got its present name and it joined the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia), and today, it is one of the leading cities of Slovenia.
The Krka River Valley above Novo Mesto is considered by many the most beautiful Slovenian river valley. It emphasizes the soft hills, picturesque rapids, and natural dams. Special attractions include a number of mills and castles, which flow into the landscape in a beautiful image of a time that no longer exists. There are great conditions for tourism, fishing, and hunting. In the town itself, there are numerous cultural monuments and attractions, especially the Dolenjski Museum with a great archaeological heritage. However, the city is small and it is in definitely not a party place, so do not have too high expectations for Novo Mesto’s nightlife.
Novo Mesto hostels are not many, but they compensate with their very good location in the center of the city, not far from the main sights; very good living conditions; great service; and last but not least, very affordable prices. The scarcity of Novo Mesto hostels can be a problem as there is a good number of tourists in the winter season and you may not have so many alternatives to stay in the city. So, it is not a bad idea to book your Novo Mesto hostel in advance.
