Tossa de Mar, a seaside town in the comarca (county) of Selva, Catalonia, was previously known as Tossa. Because of its location, it was officially renamed as Tossa de Mar, or Tossa of the Sea.

Like many towns in Catalonia, Tossa de Mar has a long history that dates back to the Neolithic period. Ancient Iberian tribes and Roman conquerors have settled in the town. Since then, the town has always been populated.

Since then, Tossa de Mar has continued to grow as a holiday attraction. The economy of present day Tossa de Mar is dependent upon tourism.
