This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Avenches.
Avenches is a small historic town in western Switzerland, about a thirty-minute drive away from the capital of Bern. The origins of Avenches go way back before Christ, so the town has a very long and vibrant history, which can still be felt if you visit the historic Roman site and the Roman Museum with the best-preserved amphitheatre in Switzerland, which is nowadays used for different cultural events and concerts, such as the Carnival in March, Avenches Opera Festival in July, Avenches Tattoo in September, and Rock Oz'Arenes with many famous international musicians in August.
A walk through the lovely medieval old town is also an interesting experience that should not be missed. You can visit the beautiful Avenches Castle, historic town hall, various churches from many centuries ago, and a couple of fascinating monuments. As the town is surrounded by various lakes (including the largest wholly Swiss Lake Neuchatel), there are also plenty of opportunities for water activities.
Although Avenches is small, there is a lot of history to be experienced. And just in case you get bored, there is always an option to visit the nearby town of Payerne, which is a little larger and also offers a few interesting historic sights of its own. Unfortunately the Avenches hostel options are pretty limited, which is not really surprising since Avenches and the nearby towns are small. However, existing Avenches hostel dorms are very modern, comfortable, and clean, although not among the cheapest in this part of Europe.
