Situated on the sunny side of Switzerland’s Rhone valley, the Valais village of Fiesch is a perfect starting point for tourists looking to explore the Aletsch Glacier and the Goms Valley, or just enjoy the many outdoor recreation opportunities this charming town has to offer. The extensive leisure facility here offers activities for the entire family, an achievement which has been recognized with the “Families Welcome” seal of quality.
Winter sports are particularly popular here, because snow is guaranteed on the over 104km of slops within the Aletsch Arena skiing area – which accommodates both newcomers to the world of skiing and snowboarding and more accomplished practitioners. Cross-country trails stretch across 100km nearby, at the holiday region of Goms, and there are plenty of winter hiking trails for visitors who prefer not to strap skis or boards to their feet. The adjacent Fiescheralp resort even offers a 13km toboggan run.
Accommodations here are quite varied, as this destination is a popular one for tourists from around the globe. Hotels and hostels book up quickly during the holidays, and visitors can stay at bed and breakfasts, resorts, or vacation rentals, as well. A hostel stay in Fiesch is exciting no matter what time of year you visit, however.
Local attractions include the Eggishorn, a 2927m summit that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps, is the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Jungfrau-Aletsch. Special events are hosted year round, including a half marathon and an open-air film festival during the summer months, a spooky full moon festival in the early autumn, and a large advent market in November.
The best way to get to a hostel or hotel is Fiesch is by train, as the village is located on the railway from Brig to Andermatt. There is also a cable car from Fiesch to Kuhboden, on the mountain above the village, or to Bellwald, which offers spectacular views toward the Matterhorn.
