Looking for budget stays in Lugano? This section is designed to save you time, money, and unnecessary stress. We've got insider tips to help you find affordable hostels and the cheapest places to stay in Lugano.
Lugano, which has been developed heavily in the last twenty years, is the third-largest financial center in Switzerland after Zurich and Geneva. Worth seeing is the Parc Civico with its lush southern vegetation, which also houses the Villa Ciani. The city has a distinctly Italian character, especially the old town with the promenades Via Nassa and Piazza RiForma. Other attractions are the two hills of Lugano -- the mountains Monte San Salvatore and Monte Bre. You can enjoy the beautiful panorama of the city from Lake Lugano and the Ticino Mountains. The mountains are accessible both by train and on foot. You can also visit the picturesque village of Gandria and the Villa Favorita.
Lugano has several museums -- the Museum of Art, the Culture Museum, the Cantonal Art Museum, the Cantonal Museum of Natural History, and the Swiss Customs Museum. You should definitely visit the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. The church is first mentioned in writings dating back from the ninth century. The splendid Renaissance façade was completed in the early sixteenth century. Other interesting churches are the Parish Church of Santa Maria degli Angioli, the Church San Rocco, and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
If you're looking for nightlife and clubs, you will be disappointed and you may even find Lugano somewhat boring. It is a peaceful and quiet city with great infrastructure. As such, there are not many Lugano hostels, as it is a rather small and non-tourist city. However, you can find a few Lugano hostels in the center of the city, all of which are quite expensive for normal hostel standards but normal for Switzerland. It is a very expensive country, so you cannot expect to find very cheap Lugano hostels. To compensate the high price, the hostels in Lugano are very good and they offer more than the average hostels do.
