Get to know Friday Harbor

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Friday Harbor.

For a beautiful destination off the typical tourist track, Friday Harbor, Washington, USA, could prove to be the answer to the question you didn’t know you were asking. Incorporated as a town in the early twentieth century, Friday Harbor is situated on the eastern shore of San Juan Island (one of the one hundred seventy-two islands in the northernmost stretch of Puget Sound). With a population a little over two thousand, Friday Harbor sits between Canada’s Vancouver Island and the Washington State mainland.

While there is at least one hostel in Friday Harbor, Washington, USA, the selection of hostel-type accommodation is not extensive. For those with limited funds, there are a few reasonably priced hotels and relatively affordable accommodation, but to get the kind of rock-bottom prices hostels regularly command might prove a little tricky in Friday Harbor.

The easiest way to get to Friday Harbor is via ferry (we don’t recommend swimming across!) and many ferries allow you to bring your car with you if you wish to drive.

Once you’re in Friday Harbor, there are several things to do to keep you entertained. On the top of your list of things to do is to go dolphin- and whale-watching -- there are several companies that offer this activity, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find someone to satisfy this dream. Make sure you come for a visit in the right season, however. Another fun water-based activity to sink your teeth into is sailing, which is also offered in Friday Harbor. Alternatively, you could try out canoeing or kayaking.

If you’re hoping to explore the area, a good place to start is Lime Kiln Point State Park, which has views to die for. You should also make a point of visiting the Lime Kiln Point State Park Interpretative Center. Among the other places worthy of putting on your itinerary are the Pelindaba Lavender Farm, The Whale Museum, and the English Camp and the American Camp for a touch of history.
