This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Punta del Este.
Punta del Este is a balneary resort located in the department of Maldonado, just a few hours from the capital Montevideo. The balneary has two types of beaches -- the ocean beaches (Atlantic Ocean) and the beaches of the river (Rio da Prata). This is a favorite place of celebrities and it is common to discover famous faces spending their holidays on the city. Consequently, the city does not have a very cheap cost of living. Even so, the city is crowded in high season and finding a Punta del Este hostel is extremely hard at these times, so it is good to organize this trip well ahead of time.
This balneary is also the target of several cruises during the season, but the cruises may not always enter in the port due to weather. So to get inside with the cruise in Punta Del Este is considered fortunate, but the most passengers are not aware of this.
The balneary has a choice of hostels in Punta del Este; there are also hotels and inside of some of them, the city possesses some casinos where you can gamble legally. In addition, the city has an excellent gastronomic coverage. There are lots of restaurants and dining establishments where you can find the famous parrilladas, a Uruguayan BBQ that's very famous in the region and extremely tasty.
One of the postcards of the city is the sculpture of a hand coming out of the sand, called Monumento Los Dedos or Monumento al Alhogado. The sculpture is located at the fourth stop on the Brava beach and it is a good stop for photos.
On some beaches the rental of jetskis for recreation is allowed. It's worth doing this tour; jetskis may be piloted only by the person who rented it (without an instructor), which allows you drive in your own pace and enjoy it a lot.
