This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Fishguard.
Fishguard is a small harbor town on the western coast of Wales and a popular destination as a port for a ferry ride to or from Ireland (it is also fairly accessible by train or car). There is only a local bus service that passes through town, but it will take you to almost any other destination along the Pembrokeshire Coast. Your options for hostels in Fishguard will be centrally located, but keep in mind, the town itself is pretty far from any large city (the closest is Haverfordwest to the south), and as such, there are not too many options for shopping for groceries. However, there are a few little shops in town, plenty of pubs with good food, and a gas station if you're driving.
For things to do in the evening, do not expect loud clubs with loud music! Stop by the Royal Oak on a Tuesday night for folk songs, jigs, and other traditional Welsh (and sometimes Irish) performances. If you want a smaller venue, try the Ship Inn. There are often market days as well in town, where you can try some fabulous cheese or other local wares!
If the weather isn't too drab, take a walk along the coast! The Pembrokeshire coastline boasts dramatic and breathtaking views. Ireland is also a short (and cheap!) ferry ride away from Fishguard as well.
Fishguard hostels and those in the area usually are open and you can show up with reasonable short notice, but look out for bank holidays, because at those times, they can book up far in advance!
